What does CUIN mean?
To measure the quality and effectiveness of goose-down filling, indicators such as filling power or insulation volume, which is calculated in cubic inches (CUIN), are used. The higher the value, the more air the duvet can capture and the better the thermal insulation relative to its volume and weight.
Tips
Duvets and pillows filled with down are the most effective at capturing a larger amount of air, thus offering better insulation and superior thermal comfort.
Here are some basic indications and tips for choosing and taking care of pillows and duvets filled with down.
The benefits of down and goose feathers:
- and feathers do not "tighten" and do not form lumps, as many other types of stuffing do.
- Both down duvets and feather/down pillows are machine washable.
- Down and feather bed articles have affordable prices and are particularly durable.
- Down is a natural fiber, so it offers better ventilation than synthetic materials.
The down used for HappyNest duvets and pillows is treated and cleaned according to international standards and recommendations. In the cleaning process, pure water and repeated washing cycles are used to wash and clean the filling. This is how we make sure that the HappyNest pillow and duvet that reaches you are clean and properly sanitized.
Always use bed linen for pillows and duvets filled with down
Both our pillows and duvets have their own high-quality cotton cover, but you must also use regular bed linen. Choose your favorite color or design and make your bed the most comfortable place in your home.
The protection offered by pillowcases and duvets will ensure that you can enjoy the products filled with down for a longer period of time and that your bed remains a clean and healthy sleeping environment.
Air the pillows and duvet as often as possible - ideally once a week
By exposing the duvet and pillow to fresh air, you ensure that they stay dry, have a pleasant smell and maintain the elasticity of the down filling. This should be done on dry and sunny days.
Do not wash products filled with down too often
Do not cover the bed with a blanket immediately after waking up in the morning - this way the duvet can dry more easily, getting rid of the moisture it absorbed during the night.
Maintenance
No other natural material tolerates water better than goose down and feathers - these birds spend more time in the water than on land! The downs properties help them to stay clean and warm for a long time.
The HappyNest duvet covers and pillowcases are made of 100% cotton, certified according to the Oeko Tex 100 standard, and are washable.
You can wash the HappyNest duvets in a washing machine with a capacity of at least 7 kg, at a temperature of 30C.
For optimal drying, choose a strong spin cycle. You can opt for two cycles if it seems to you that the quilt is still wet.
HappyNest pillows can be washed in an ordinary washing machine, with a capacity of 5 kg, at a washing cycle with a temperature of 30C.
For a better distribution of the down filling during drying, you can add a few clean tennis balls to the dryer together with the pillows.
As with duvets, make sure that HappyNest pillows are well dried before re-using them after washing.
FAQ
How long can you use a goose-down quilt?
If the duvet is properly cared for, it can be kept in excellent condition for up to 20 years or more. Here are some things that will shorten the life of your down comforter, so try to avoid them if possible:
- Restless sleep
- Compressing the comforter when stored
- Improper washing, dry cleaning, or too frequent wash cycles
- Cleaning with very strong chemicals
Is goose down anti-allergenic?
Contrary to popular belief, synthetic quilts are not necessarily better for allergies than natural materials. In most situations, allergies are triggered by dust mites, mainly down or feathers. Synthetic bedding products can harbor more mites due to a cover with less dense fabric, for example, or limited breathability.
Allergic reactions to the use of pillows and duvets made of down and feathers observed during tests performed by experts were mainly due to mite allergens contained in untreated down and feathers.
When natural goose down goes through a rigorous cleaning process, it becomes hypoallergenic. If they are kept clean, down and feather products are less likely to aggravate your allergies than synthetic ones.
How do you refresh feather pillows without washing them?
Simply put the down pillows in the dryer together with the scented dryer sheets or special wool balls. You can leave them for a short cycle in the dryer, and they will be more fragrant and fluffier afterward, without requiring washing.
When is it time to change the pillows?
- The pillow looks misshapen or feels lumpy because the filling has lost its elasticity.
- You wake up with a headache or neck pain, due to the uncomfortable position offered by the pillow The
- pillow is very stained
- The cover is torn and the filling often comes out of the pillow
How long can the down pillows be used?
A pillow can be used for 10 to 15 years.
Because pillows can get dirtier than duvets, some recommend replacing them every 2 years, but with proper care, a down pillow can be used for a longer period of time.
Down pillows can be easily washed and refreshed, if necessary.
Which material is better: goose feathers or goose down?
Down is the best insulator per ounce of any other stuffing, natural or artificial. Down provides much more warmth per ounce than feathers. For this reason, duvets made only of feathers contain much more filling and are heavier than down duvets. They need more filling to achieve the same level of insulation and warmth.
